Για την επέτειο των 20 χρόνων λειτουργίας του, το Fondation Beyeler διοργάνωσε ένα αφιέρωμα στον Γάλλο ιμπρεσιονιστή Κλώντ Μονέ (Claude Oscar Monet)...

Together with Atelier Zumthor we presented our extension project to the press yesterday and got fantastic feedback. Thank you! The extension will be constructed on the previously private land of the Iselin-Weber Park, which adjoins the Fondation Beyeler. A new public park will thus be created in the heart of Riehen. The Fondation Beyeler will thereby create a group of museum buildings that satisfies the needs of a visitor-friendly museum. Peter Zumthor’s design distributes the various functions between three relatively small buildings and is consequently a project that is adapted to Riehen’s village-like character and that blends harmoniously into the natural environment. Zumthor plans a simple service building for administration and deliveries, a transparent pavilion for events and a House for Art. Together, they create a subtle link between the two parks, which were designed by the same landscape architect, Jean-François Caillat, in the early 19th century. Πρόκειται για την έκθεση "Monet", που εστιάζει σε επιλεγμένες πτυχές του έργου του καλλιτέχνη και επικεντρώνεται στη δημιουργική περίοδο μεταξύ του 1880 και των αρχών του 20ου αιώνα. Μέσα από τους 63 πίνακες της έκθεσης - από τη συλλογή του Fondation Beyeler αλλά και από δάνεια από ιδιωτικές συλλογές ή από μεγάλα μουσεία του κόσμου- ο θεατής εισχωρεί σε μια γιορτή του φωτός και τον χρωμάτων, στον διάσημο εικονογραφικό κόσμο του Μονέ με τα μεσογειακά τοπία του, τις άγριες παράκτιες σκηνές του Ατλαντικού, τις απεικονίσεις κατά μήκος του Σηκουάνα, τα λουλούδια των λιβαδιών, τους καθεδρικοί ναούς και τις γέφυρες, και βέβαια τα περίφημα νούφαρά του.

Κάποιοι πίνακες της έκθεσης -από ιδιωτικές συλλογές- είναι εξαιρετικά δυσκολοθώρητοι και αποτελούν μια από τις ιδιαίτερες στιγμές της έκθεσης.   Ο Μονέ ήταν ένας μεγάλος πρωτοπόρος. Πειραματίστηκε όσο ελάχιστοι άλλοι με το φως και τις δραματικές αλλαγές του στο χρώμα μέσα από τις αντανακλάσεις και τις σκιές (γι' αυτό άλλωστε και ζωγράφιζε σειρές όμοιων θεμάτων, ώστε να μελετήσει την μεταβολή του φωτός). 

Στα έργα του η πιστή αναπαράσταση του κόσμου φαίνεται να είναι δευτερεύουσας σημασίας. Τα αντικείμενα του εξωτερικού κόσμου υπάρχουν μόνο ως φορείς του φωτός, χάνουν το σταθερό περίγραμμά τους και αναδύονται σαν θαμπά σχήματα από το βάθος μιας πυκνής ατμόσφαιρας. Claude Monet was a visionary not only as an artist but also in the way he lived. Unusual for his times he lived with his second wife Alice Hoschedé and her children from a previous partnership as a patchwork family. Oscar-Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840, the son of Claude-Alphonse, a commercial officer,and Louise-Justine Aubrée. From 1845 on he grew up in the port city of Le Havre in Normandy, his father having found employment in the trading house of his brother in-law, Jacques Lecadre. The Lecadres owned a house three kilometers away in the little fishing village of Sainte-Adresse, which as a burgeoning bathing resort was much loved by the Monets. Claude attended the local high school beginning in 1851 and there received his first drawing lessons. His earliest surviving sketches dating from 1856 show caricatures of his teachers and the landscapes of Le Havre.
